Tourism in Zaragoza continues to increase year after year and the statistics confirm that Zaragoza has become a very attractive destination among Spanish and foreigners.

During the period January-October 2019 and comparing it to 2018, Zaragoza experienced an increase in travellers and overnight stays according to data provided by the National Institute of Statistics. This growth is particularly noticeable in terms of international tourism  with an increase of 4.50% in travellers and 3.47% in international overnight stays, being China, France, the United Kingdom, Italy and Portugal the main issuers.

The promotion of the destination is essential and various promotional actions have been organized, some in collaboration with the Tourism Department of the Government of Aragon, such as attendance at tourist fairs, promotional events and meetings as well as attention to professionals during their stay in Zaragoza in order to show them what the city offers to its visitors.

This year, the focus has been on the south-eastern French market, given the good communications with Zaragoza, both by road and by train.

Montpellier, connected in less than 5 hours thanks to the direct and daily connection by TGV Renfe-Sncf, was the first destination chosen to present the city’s tourist offer.  In addition to the presentation to travel agents and tourist prescribers, an information point was set up at the train station, accompanied by an advertising campaign.

In October, a mirror campaign was set up with Toulouse, a city with which Zaragoza has had bilateral agreements for years. The presentation of Zaragoza to traval agents and bloggers in Toulouse took place on 24 October . Both were accompanied by advertising campaigns in both cities. These actions were complemented by press trips and blogtrips with professionals from Montpellier, Narbonne, Aix-en-Provence and Perpignan, carried out in collaboration with Renfe-Sncf.

Regarding the promotion of Zaragoza on British market, Zaragoza Turismo attended the annual workshop specialising in urban tourism, City Fair in London, the presentation of World Tapa Day in collaboration with Saborea España in London as well as the World Travel Market.

In addition, a BBC team travelled to Zaragoza to record a documentary for the famous traval programme Great Continental Railway Journeys presented by Michael Portillo which will be broadcast in 2020.

In addition, in September, several relevant British cultural tour operators interested in our city were able to know the offer and tourist infrastructure of Zaragoza personally. They took note during the 4 days of their stay of the concept of Real Spain away from the excesses of tourists, where they were able to enjoy culture and heritage as well as gastronomy, urban art and the lifestyle of the locals.

Last October, a familiarization trip was organised with important Chinese tour operators, agencies and media controlling the flow of tourists from this market to Spain. In just over a day, they were able to discover and expand their knowledge of Zaragoza’s heritage, culture, folklore and gastronomic offerings, as well as meet members of the Club Nihao Zaragoza, in order to establish professional links with city’s companies.

The promotion of the destination on the Italian market was achieved through the participation of Zaragoza Turismo for the third year in a row, to the Roadshow Spain – Italy, organized and coordinated by Tourspain through its delegations from Rome and Milan, in collaboration with the Tourism Department of the Government of Aragon, in the cities of Bari, Naples, Milan and Genoa. In addition, several Italian bloggers visited Zaragoza throughout the year and introduced their followers to the city.

This year, we opened the international promotion to Portugal with the participation in two actions in Lisbon: a workshop in March, organised by the Spanish Confederation of Travel Agencies, CEAV, and the Association of Travel Agencies of Portugal and a promotional action organised by the Tourism Department of the Government of Aragon, on 7 November, on the occasion of Ryanair’s new Zaragoza-Lisbonne air connection.

These actions aimed to the international market were complemented by participation in the Salon des Vacances de Bruxelles, the most important tourist event in Belgium, and the ITB in Berlin, the world’s leading tourism fair.
