Art Nouveau in Zaragoza

At the beginning of the 20th century, thanks to the celebration of the Hispano-French Exposition of 1908, new buildings bloomed in Zaragoza and filled the city with elegance, modernity and joy, so typical in Art Nouveau.

This artistic style is known as “Modernismo” in Spain, so take note of the “edificios modernistas” in Zaragoza we are going to show you right now!

Bandstand Parque Grande

The Exposition we mentioned took place on the Plaza de los Sitios. In the middle of it was one of the most beautiful and sophisticated examples of Art Nouveau in Zaragoza: the bandstand now emplaced in the Parque Grande José Antonio Labordeta. Its canopy structure consists of a stone base and eight cast-iron columns supporting a glass cupola decorated with colored ceramic pieces. It is a superb work of art not to be missed during your visit!

In those times, the bourgeoisie of Zaragoza began to install their residences on Sagasta boulevard and built beautiful houses and buildings. At 11 Sagasta you will find Casa Juncosa, one of best Art Nouveau works left in Zaragoza and a magnificent example of bourgeois building of great opulence which was declared National Monument in 1983. A little further at 13 Sagasta stands Casa Retuerta. Its sober language, geometric bay windows and floral ornamentation also granted its recognition as declared National Monument in 1983.

Casino mercantilThere are other interesting buildings on that same boulevard, such as those at 37 and 40 Sagasta: eclectic style houses with some Art Nouveau decorative elements. Near Plaza de España, the heart of the city, you can admire the magnificent façade of the former Casino Mercantil, whose façade is one of the most representative of the late Art Nouveau in Zaragoza.

If you continue through the old town, you will find other beautiful properties of the time. At 2 Calle Alfonso there is Molins House, one of the best examples of the Art Nouveau aesthetics. At 25 Calle Prudencio you will see a building that offers an interesting example of juxtaposition of Art Nouveau lines forming an eclectic façade, and at 16 Calle Manifestación a building whose three facades share common features of Art Nouveau.

Casa SolansFinally, on the left bank of the Ebro you cannot miss one of our secrets treasures. Casa Solans is an authentic jewel built between 1918 and 1921 and one of the best examples of private Art Nouveau architecture that we possess in Zaragoza, characterized by the magnificence of its tiles and mosaics.
