Christmas in Zaragoza

The countdown to Christmas has begun : have you already planned your holidays with your family or friends? Zaragoza is an ideal option to celebrate the last days of 2017, and we will tell you why!

Until January 7th 2018, Zaragoza celebrates Christmas all around the city. On the Pilar square you will find most of the activities for the end of the year, organised for every kind of public.

Are you a fan of Nativity scenes?

Crèche in the Pilar square:
Zaragoza has the largest giant Nativity scene in Spain. It is located on the Pilar square, at the foot of the Pilar Basilica. It receives every year hundreds of thousands of visitors, both locals and tourists. The total surface of the crèche is 1,800 square metres and 1,066 square metres of garden. It consists of 56 figures on a human scale, in addition to several representations of animals such as sheep, goats, dogs, ducks and geese, which increase the number of characters to a hundred. Many traditional scenes are set up: the Nativity itself, the souk of merchants, a carpenter and apprentice, a potter with his wheel or a craftsman and his wicker basket.

Opening hours: 11:00 – 14:00 / 16:00 – 21:00
Free entrance.

Crèche of Ibercaja:

The headquarters of Ibercaja in Basilio Paraíso square expose every year behind their display window a superb crèche. It is formed by more than 200 characters and occupies 50 square metres. Some of the scenes recreated are inspired by locations of the region of Aragón such as Albarracín, the monastery of San Juan de la Peña or Tarazona.

Free entrance.

Crêche CAI Sala Luzán:
The Sala Luzán of the CAI bank, located at 10 Paseo de Independencia, also exposes since 2012 a Nativity scene with more than 250 characters, some of them in movement.

Free entrance.

Are you keen on winter sports?

One more year, the Pilar square turns into a winter sports centre!

The most adventurous of you must try the snowpark, its different circuits and zip-lines! Or even go down the snowy slope with the inflatable sledges!
For the most classic, visit the largest covered ice rink with Zaragoza : it’s another experience not to be missed during the holidays!

Do you prefer culture?

Zaragoza is made for you! Many cultural events are scheduled during the holidays and the agenda is really varied: theatre, concerts, exhibitions, dance, live music, etc. Furthermore, there are some interesting initiatives like ‘Libros que importan’ (which could be translated as ‘books precious to you’), and ‘Cuentos al viento’. We will detail these activities next week!

Are you a gourmand?

You will love the Christmas market ! Every day until January 7 from 11: 00 to 22: 00 or until midnight on Saturdays and holidays. Besides all types of crafts, you can enjoy the salty or sweet specialties such as roasted potatoes, bacon sandwiches or sausage, cheese, pancakes, waffles, doughnuts, and of course the delicious “turrón”, typical sweet of Christmas in Spain.

Once you have participated in all the activities and filled your stomach, don’t leave without writing your wishes for New Year on the Tree of Whises. It stands in front of the City Hall in the middle of the Pilar square.
Monday to Friday: 17:30 – 19:30.
Saturday and holidays: 11:30 – 13:30 / 17:30 – 19:30

You can also join the contest to give the new Christmas market mascote a name : it is a 4 metres high snowman which will delight the little ones!

Do you want to return home with a memory of this magical moment in Zaragoza? This year the first commemorative object from the Christmas market has been launched, a lovely ceramic cup decorated by a designer from Zaragoza, Oscar San Martin. This cup called Taza de los sueños (‘Cup of Dreams’) is totally homemade, which means each model unique. Not only it commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Christmas market in Zaragoza but it also has a solidarity aspect because all the incomes will be allocated to project to build a new school for the disabled .
