Zaragoza boasts fine examples of Renaissance buildings. The Palace of Sástago is one of them. Currently, this space houses temporary exhibitions of various kinds but visitors can’t miss the story of the building.

This Renaissance palace was built between 1570 and 1574. It belonged to don Artal de Alagón, count of Sástago and Viceroy of Aragon. It was Royal residence during the visits of the monarchs to the city and, later, it was also the residence of the General Palafox until 1815. It also housed the General military government until 1825; and the accounts department of the army as well as police headquarters between 1827 and 1847

In 1981, the Diputación Provincial de Zaragoza bought the building, that was in a very bad state, beginning its restoration. On its facade are preserved original features from the 16th century and other Baroque added in subsequent reforms. We can highlight the two large gates giving access to the arcaded courtyard, topped by a dome, and the grand staircase that leads to the mezzanine and the noble floor.

On the mezzanine floor there are two bedrooms, one of them with Aragonese coffered ceiling and beams of painted wood, with floral and Zoomorphic decorations.

On the noble floor are located the main halls. The throne room, on the side of the Coso and opposite, an area formerly occupied by the Casino of Zaragoza (of which the cafeteria and the old fencing room are preserved), on the side of the garden and has a modernist library.

There is a third floor which boasts several modernist halls of the 19th century which can be accessed by a corridor.
