From 23rd to 25th February, Zaragoza will live again at the rhythm of the Carnival!

The Carnival of Zaragoza has a strong tradition. It was banned during the years of the dictatorship and recovered in 1980, when the city of Zaragoza decided that the streets were to fill again with joy and feast with its characters Don Carnal, Doña Cuaresma, el Conde de Salchichón, el Rey de Gallos, and el Caballero de la Hornilla.

The Conde Salchichón is the organizer of the carnival. He checks that everything goes well from the beginning, at the reception of Don Carnal, until the end when Doña Cuaresma arrives. It is the host of the children’s carnival.

The Rey de Gallos (King of the Roosters) was chosen by the students of the University. This award was given to the funniest companion to brighten up the carnival. The cock symbolizes the excesses of these days.

The Caballero de la Hornilla is a character recovered in 2013. He carries a skewer of meat ready to put in the oven.

Don Carnal is the king of the carnival and symbolizes the good things of life: meat, eating, drinking, fun, jokes, partying …

Doña Cuaresma represents the time of the Christian tradition that comes next: 7 weeks of fasting, penance and confinement to receive the Holy Week.

The Carnival starts with the Thursday Lardero, which some time ago was celebrated with a picnic, and where meat was not missing, since after that Cuaresma arrived and during these days its consumption was banned. The dances of the masks among others complete the festive program of the day.

The Saturday of Carnival is the day of the parade, when satire and irony make the streets of the city their festive décor. On Sunday the protagonists are children.
