On October 12th, Zaragoza lived its most important day of the Fiestas del Pilar, the flower offering to the Virgin of the Pilar, the most emblematic act  of the Fiestas. From early in the morning till late in the afternoon, thousands of people from Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain and all over the world gathered in the streets of the city to offer their flowers to the Virgin of the Pilar, Patron Saint of the Hispanic world.

Here are some of the other traditional acts of the Fiestas del Pilar:

THE DAWN ROSARY

The Dawn Rosary is the first religious act which takes place in the early morning. A tradition which dates from the VIII century and which has lasted to our time. This procession brings together hundreds of the faithful who walk through the streets of the city centre, from the Parish of San Pablo to the Basílica del Pilar.

FRUITS OFFERING TO THE VIRGIN

During the morning of October 13, the Regional Associations established in the city offer the Virgen del Pilar a wide variety of fruits. All the fruit collected each year, is subsequently transferred to Care Centers in the city. This act has become one of the most striking and colorful of the fiestas.

ROSARIO DE CRISTAL

The procession of the Rosario de Cristal is another of the multitudinous acts which are held. A tradition which lights up the streets of Zaragoza on the evening of October 13 and which creates much expectation among the citizens and visitors.

Hundreds of persons, wearing the regional costume, walk in procession accompanied by the traditional mysteries and glass lamps which symbolize each of the parts of the prayer of the rosary.

GIGANTES and CABEZUDOS

Another most beloved traditions of the citizens of Zaragoza is the parade of Giants (Gigantes) and Big Heads (Cabezudos). The characters that make up the troupe are icons of popular culture or real people who lived in Zaragoza. In the following post you will find more information on these characters.

Nowadays the parade is made up of 11 Cabezudos (el Morico, el Tuerto, el Forano, la Forana, el Berrugón, el Torero, el Robaculeros, el Boticario, La Pilara, el Azutero – new in Fiestas of 2013, la Cigarrera – new in Fiestas of 2015), and 12 Gigantes (el Rey, la Reina, el Duque, la Duquesa, Don Quijote, Dulcinea, El Chino, La Negra, el Bearnés, la Bearnesa, José de Palafox y Agustina de Aragón).
