Central Market Zaragoza

It has more than a century and is located in the same space where the market of the city in the XIII century was built, next to the Roman walls. We speak about the lively and colorful Central Market of Zaragoza, an emblematic building that attracts the attention of everyone who comes, as it looks like the Parisian railway stations of nineteenth century. 20130702_Mercado-Central_07

This unique building was opened in 1903 by the architect Felix Navarro and constitutes a good example of Modernism architecture. For its construction were employed elements such as brick, stone and it introduces more innovative materials like iron and glass, resulting in a building where tradition and modernity are mixed.

Outside the building, look at the main doors, designed as a triumphal arches, where you can contemplate a profuse decoration in stone that speaks of a singular building, with representations of elements related to agriculture, livestock, fishing and trade. 20130702_Mercado-Central_07

When you visit the market, be sure to notice the plaque on the wall that reminds visitors that the defender of citizens, Juan de Lanuza, was beheaded in this square in 1591.

In 1978, the Central Market of Zaragoza was declared Historical National Monument and it was declared “Bien de Interés Cultural” in 1982. In 1986, the building and the stalls were renovated, which have been passed from generation to generation. Currently there are 190 stalls where you can find a great variety of fresh products and preserved food, being the biggest retailer market of the cityEstatua de César Augusto

Opposite the North door of the building you can see the statue of the Emperor Augusto, gift by the Italian Government to the city in the years 40 of the last century. And nearby, next to the Roman walls, you´ll find the Tourism Office of the Zuda Tower. On its fifth floor you´ll have access to a wonderful panoramic view of the city.

Undoubtedly, the Central Market is one of those landmarks that you can´t miss during your visit in Zaragoza.
