Larrinaga palace, Zaragoza

Larrinaga palace is an astonishing building for its beauty. It is unknown even to many of Zaragoza citizens as it is not in the historic center of the city. Want to know the history of this unique area?

This building was built in the first decade of the 20th century. It was ordered by the Basque shipowner, Miguel Larrinaga, as a residence for his retirement. The architect in charge of the work was the Aragonese Félix Navarro, known for works in Zaragoza such as the Central Market, the monument to Justice or the biscuit factory Patria. Larrinaga palace is the best eclecticism example which can be found in Zaragoza. On its decoration there are maritime motifs in reference to the profession of Larrinaga.

But this building has a romantic history behind. Miguel Larrinaga married Asunción Clavero, born in Albalate del Arzobispo (Teruel). They met in the Basilica of the Pilar in Zaragoza after a church service and no longer separated. Both lived in Liverpool, due to the work of Miguel, where they had 3 children.

The idea of building this palace was a gift that Miguel wanted for his wife, a special place where both could enjoy retirement. The palace, which was to be called Villa Asunción, is built on a plot 107,000 meters and looking directly at the hometown of Asunción (keep in mind that when it was built, it was just outside the city and nothing hid the views).

Unfortunately, the building was never inhabited. Asunción died at age 65 truncating the dreams of the couple. Miguel sold the building and furniture that decorated it and died 10 years later. Both are buried together in the cemetery of Liverpool.

Today the building is owned by Ibercaja, which offers guided visits to the palace to understand and appreciate the beauty and history of the place.
