Zaragoza receives the Award Cátedra China

Zaragoza is celebrating the winning of the Award ‘Cátedra China’. This is the first edition of this prize that wants to highlight those institutions, individuals and sectors that, contribute to understanding and cooperation between Spain and China.

This project, pioneering in Spain, is a forum for information, discussion and debate to a better understanding of China, contribute to the bilateral relationship and improve the aproach between the Spanish and the Chinese people. It aims to promote a dialogue between the two countries, with politicians more opened to create contacts with China, journalists contextualizing more the news, entrepreneurs seizing the enormous opportunities of the Chinese market, and  that young people know another culture where they will be protagonists.

Cátedra China Awards

Overall the group ‘Cátedra China’ is composed for over 130 experts who have known and studied the Asian country and have lived and worked on it in recent decades analyzing its huge transformations. Two years after its establishment, they have considered useful to promote these awards with a single purpose: promote the knowledge, analysis and debate on the role of China in the twenty-first century and its relevance for all as a solid basis for further dialogue and understanding between the two cultures.

Chinese admiring Goya paintingsThis year they wanted to highlight a few areas, where communication and understanding between Spain and China are of particular significance in this time and in the immediate future: tourism, art, culture and sport. The other guideline for the proposal of the awards has been to emphasize institutions rather than individuals which dedicate their structure, organization and means to promote closer relations and understanding between the two countries.

Zaragoza in particular has been awarded for being the Spanish city that has increased the number of Chinese tourists – a 473 % in 2014 – which is a great success due to the many actions aimed at this market. The other award-winning are China Cultural Centre in Madrid, Thyssen Museum and Special Mention Award for Gregorio Manzano.

The award ceremony will take place on April 14th at 20.30 Chinese discovering Zaragozahours, at the Intercontinental Hotel in Madrid in a cocktail-dinner format. At this event were invited the ambassador of the PR China’s Ministry of Industry and Tourism, the Cloisters of ‘Cátedra China’, the jury, public and private institutions and companies especially related to China, several Chinese and Spanish media as well as the winners and their representatives.

The jury was formed by: Eugenio Bregolat, Ambassador of Spain and Honorary President of ‘Cátedra China’; Marcelo Muñoz, president and dean of Spanish business in China; Victor Cortizo, Vice President and President of Cortizo Lawyers; Octavio Claw, professor of psychology at the Rey Juan Carlos University; Larry Levene, documentarian and filmmaker; Luis Cobos, composer and orchestra (including Beijig Philharmonic) and President of the Iberian Association of Artists.
