The art of Goya in Zaragoza: paintings and engravings

Francisco de Goya y Lucientes is one of the most universal Spanish painters. This Aragonese artist, spent part of his childhood and youth in Zaragoza. We show you the places where you can admire his work in the city.

Born in Fuendetodos, a small town in the province of Zaragoza, he soon moved to Zaragoza with his family to train with the painter José Luzán as an apprentice. In Fuendetodos you can visit the Museum of Engraving and his birthplace house. In Zaragoza, he lived in the Plaza de San Miguel for several years; a plaque on the façade of the building recalls this.

His works represent the beginning of contemporary painting. In Zaragoza he made important paintings as the Coreto Dome (1772) and the dome Regina Martyrum (1780-1781) in the Basilica del Pilar; and the murals of the Charterhouse of Aula Dei (1772-1774).

At the Museum of Zaragoza, located in the Plaza de Los Sitios, they have a wide collection of works of

Goya: Court Paintings (with portraits of Charles IV, Maria Luisa of Parma, Ferdinand, Duke of San Carlos or Luis María de Borbón Infante), from their training in Italy (Hannibal crossing the Alps), series of Caprichos, Disparates, Desastres y Tauroma quia.

Near the Plaza del Pilar is the Ibercaja Camon Aznar Museum where a large collection of paintings and engravings is exposed; and the Diocesan Museum of Zaragoza you can see Goya painted the portrait of Archbishop Joaquín Company.
