La Seo

The Cathedral of San Salvador, known as “La Seo”, was the first Christian cathedral in Zaragoza. It was built over the old Roman Forum (there is a museum just a few meters from the cathedral that shows the remains of this Forum), the Visigoth church and the old mosque of Saraqusta.

This cathedral has undergone refurbished and expanded over the centuries. This can be seen in the cluster of artistic styles that it has:  12th century Romanesque style in the apses, (with large blocks of stone and windows with arch), t14th century Aragonese Mudejar in the wall known as “muro de la parroquieta”, (built in with brick and geometric decorations of glass, 18th century neoclassical in the main facade. The baroque tower, designed by Giovanni Battista Contini, was completed in 1704 with the placement of the spire.

Inside La Seo we can highlight the choir chairs and polychrome alabaster altarpiece (15th century), performed by Pere Johan and Hans of Suabia. This altarpiece is considered a masterpiece of late Gothic Europe. Renaissance period include the choir with its chapels, and the Chapel of San Bernardo, carved in alabaster, of the Archangels and San Pedro Arbués.
The cathedral houses the museum of Flemish tapestries, fabrics from the 14th to t18th centuries. It is considered one of the top three collections in the world.

The last refurbishment made in La Seo lasted 18 years, from 1980 to 1998, and it was a radical change for the cathedral. People who knew it before its restoration, remembered it as a dark place that scared the children. Now, it’s known for its brightness and splendor. An amazing and unimaginable change  to all those who visited it before.

If you come to Zaragoza, don’t go without visiting it.
